Winter has arrived in spirit if not yet officially. While the inside of the Highland center has been filled with Holiday smells and cheer our thoughts have turned to winter activities.
All of the local alpine ski areas are up and running with a combination of natural and man made snow. The cross-country areas are also beginning to get going and with a little more snow will be in good shape. Currently Bretton Woods Nordic has 15km groomed and hopefully the Highland Center connecter will be ready soon. Great Glen, Jackson, and Bear Notch are also open so come on in and hit the trail!
I’ve been skiing on both the Bretton Woods Nordic trails and also on the Franconia Notch bike path. Depending on the recent weather my outings have been an exciting mix of speedy skating on sleety snow, mid-winter blue extra conditions, and avoiding puddles in a warm rain. It’s amazing what I enjoy skiing on this early in the year!
It is also time to get out all your winter hiking gear as the trails are a constantly changing mix of snow and ice. Make sure you bring your snowshoes, traction, and trekking poles with you.
