Suddenly, the forest isn’t still anymore. Hikers enjoyed the serene, quiet solitude of the Northern Forests for a time, but now you’re bound to be interrupted by hundreds of noisy – have you guessed it? – birds. Birds are emerging from their small family nesting groups and coming together to form flocks, calling, chirping, singing, chick-a-dee-dee-dee’ing in order to warn each other of danger… and to compete for food. They are steadily forming larger and larger groups and mixing with different species, called a mixed foraging flock. It’s a sure sign that fall migration is soon to come.
